Alcatraz

Alcatraz was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. It's one thing to hear about the prison but to actually tour the building and see the cells...it was really really cool. We also learned the life story of Al Capone and his experiences while in the prison. That was also really interesting.

The prisoner in this room escaped through the hole behind the vent. They created model heads out of concrete which they placed on the bed with covers as a distraction so the guards would think they were still sleeping.

The view was incredible. On the audio tour one of the prisoners was recorded saying "Everyday I would look outside and see that the life I dreamed of was only a mile away. Every day I came to the realization that I would never conquer that one short mile..."

In one of the famous "escape plans gone bad", the national guard was called to Alkatraz. These were the holes in the floor left from the granades.

"D-Block" These cells housed the worst criminals.

The recreation area.
