Week 2 Update

So we're on to Week 3 of our trip! Here's a quick summary of Week 2... We spent a couple of days in Seattle, including the 4th of July when we saw a really cool fireworks show (and we're pretty sure one UFO). On Sunday, we took the ferry to San Juan Island in Washington. San Juan is an incredibly beautiful island that we would recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to visit it. The highlight of the island (and thus far, the highlight of the trip) was watching the Orca whales as they swam by the coast. We were very fortunate because there are 3 pods of whales that live around the San Juan Islands, and the evening we were there all 3 happened to meet up and pass by the lighthouse where we were at the same time. We're still trying to properly convert and edit the video that our friend Steve recorded, so that will be posted at some point in the future. From San Juan, we drove down to Portland. Portland is a very interesting city, and one that we enjoyed. We had learned about two famous restaurants in Portland, which made up the majority of our time in Portland. The first was Voodoo Doughnuts and the second was Apizza Scholls. These were great and you can read about them in prior posts. We also visited the largest bookstore on the West Coast, Powells Books, and I would say don't even go in it if you don't have at least a whole day... otherwise you'll just be overwhelmed. There were way too many awesome books inside for the hour and a half that we had. From Portland, we went to Crater Lake in Oregon and camped there. Crater Lake is an amazing sight, one that everyone should experience. We left the next morning for California, Highway 1, and the giant Redwoods. We arrived in San Francisco on Thursday and have enjoyed it so far (except for the cheap hotel we got and its wet floors / smelly rooms / intermittant internet). Friday held a couple of highlights, both good and bad. In the morning, our car was sideswiped in a hit and run and in the evening we saw a rare no-hitter from the San Francisco pitcher Jonathan Sanchez. We'll be in San Francisco until Tuesday / Wednesday / until our car is repaired and then onto Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Thanks for reading.
